Obituary for Elaine Collins

Elaine Collins, 73, of Midland and formerly of Southgate, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018, at home surrounded by her family. A brief, private service for her immediate family will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 before she is laid to rest at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery.
Elaine was born November 24, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan daughter of the late Steve and Emma (Bandy) Kanalos. Elaine grew up in Delray with her three brothers, Edward, Robert, and Ronald, all of whom have preceded her in death. She later moved to Lincoln Park, where she and her beloved husband, Bruce Collins, met. He preceded her in death four days after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
They married on February 6, 1965, and, shortly after, moved to Southgate where they raised their three children Teresa ‘Teri’, Gary, and David. Elaine was a caregiver to many, and spent her life clothing, feeding, housing, and loving so, so many. Elaine was the “Kool-Aid” mom on the block, and always welcomed her children’s friends and neighbors into the house. People were free to come and go and they often did. Her fried chicken was a favorite to everyone lucky enough to know her. She put on a beautiful Christmas celebration every year and family Sunday dinners were a must. Music was always on and dancing and laughter were household staples.
Elaine leaves behind her children to cherish her memory, Teri (John) Spooner, Gary (Lisa) Collins, and David (Jill) Collins. She held a special place in her heart for her six grandchildren, Joshua (Karri) Spooner, Alesha Spooner, Justin and Nicholas Collins, and Lauren and Ava Collins. She was over-the-moon to welcome her first great-grandchild, Elijah James Spooner in April of 2018. All were there for her soon before she crossed over, and also included her nieces and nephews Angela (Kevin) Gilhuly, Stephanie (Chrishon Wilson) Kanalos, sister in-law, Janet Brown, and great-niece, Mia Kanalos shared a special bond with Elaine all their lives. Also special to Elaine was her sisters in-law Linda Kanalos, and Lois Collins, and friend Lyn Boyce. She was preceded in death by her sisters-in-laws Patsy Lou Collins, Doris Sue Tuxbury-Collins, Audrey Rocheleau.

Elaine had many nieces and nephews whom she loved:, Lorena Brunson, Kellie Whigham, Shelly Stewart, Dawn Mikola, Cheri Pietryka, Ron Pietryka,Lawrence (Barb) Kanalos, Michele (Mark) Hobart, and Michael Kanalos, , Bryon Martin, Ann Rocheleau, Cathy Armstrong, Denise Machovoe, Diane Hammerle, Geri Sue Pennavaria, and all of their families.
