Obituary for Kareen 'Keen' E. Latoski

Kareen “Keen” Latoski, 51, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at her home. Keen was born May 4, 1967, in Petoskey, Michigan, daughter of Gary and Susan E. (Mead) Beck. She grew up on the lovely water of East Bay and attended Old Mission Peninsula Elementary prior to graduating from Traverse City Central in 1985. She received an associate’s degree in Arts from Northwestern Michigan College in 1987 and in 1990 earned her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University. While attending CMU she was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and remained lifelong friends with a number of her sisters. She also met the love of her life at CMU, John Latoski, who knew after being introduced to her for the first time on a cold fall day in October of 1988, that he had finally found the missing piece to his life. The couple married on August 22, 1992, in Traverse City and moved back to Mt. Pleasant to begin their lives together. Keen worked in the hospitality service for a few years until becoming a stay at home mother and wife. The couple continued to live in Mt. Pleasant but visited her beloved Traverse City area often. She truly enjoyed spending time at her lifelong home on the bay with family, cousins, friends and neighbors. She was passionate about her family, loved her friends, loved swimming, boating, bonfires and soaking in the water of East Bay, being outdoors, gardening, crossword puzzles, sketching, pottery, piano, traveling, planning summer parties, and creating to do lists. She was also an avid reader and belonged to a local book club. One of her greatest strengths was her unwavering outlook on life, being a positive soul while dealing with her autoimmune disease on a daily basis. One of her greatest achievements was giving birth to her son Julian. She loved and cared for him with unlimited energy and passion, and was incredibly proud of the man he is today. Keen will be deeply missed by her family and friends, both near and far. She is survived by her husband, John Latoski of Mt. Pleasant; son, Julian Latoski (U.S. Navy); father, Gary Beck (Cathy Sivits) of Traverse City; sister, Kathy (Tim) McCullen of Kalkaska; nephews and niece, Tyler McCullen of Grand Rapids, Kelsey (Chris) Childers of Alaska, and Geoffrey (Amanda) Kubik of Flint; mother-in-law, Rosel Latoski of Weidman; cat, Orchid; and her Japanese koi, Hoover. She was preceded in death by her mother, Susan Beck; sister in-law, Kathryn Kubik; father in-law, Robert Latoski; cats, Toto and Pebbles, and dog, Remington. Per her wishes, Keen has been cremated and her ashes will be interred in Traverse City at the Hillacres family property after a summertime celebration of life party in 2019. The family will also be receiving friends at Lincoln Reception Center (attached to Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home), 2300 South Lincoln Road, Mount Pleasant, on Wednesday, November 7, from 4-8 p.m. where complimentary hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be available. As Keen was diagnosed with Takayasu’s Arteritis at an early age, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the Vasculitis Foundation, P.O. Box 28660, Kansas City, MO 64188. Envelopes will be available at the reception center or funeral home. The family would like any personal cards, letters, or condolences sent to 1410 Meadow Street, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858.
