each stage of the grieving process.
Richard John ‘Dick’ Smillie, 74, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Friday, November 16, 2018, at home with his family at his side. He fought a courageous battle against CMML Leukemia the past two years. Dick’s funeral will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Shidler officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow at Lincoln Reception Center (attached to the funeral home) with interment concluding at Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Pardee Cancer Fund, Community Cancer Service, or Heartland Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Dick was born October 16, 1944, in Saginaw, son of the late John Allen and Florence Margaret (Walker) Smillie. He married Carol A. Smith on November 6, 1971 at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. One of Dick’s first jobs was building silos. In 1978 he began working in the oil field industry for a number of companies including Tally Well, Well-Tech, Patriot, Arrow Energy, and Texas World Wide. He was currently a supervisor for Fortis. Dick was a mentor and father-figure to many. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, farming, and working in the woods. But nothing was more important to him than his family, especially the special relationship he held with his grandson, Zack. The two spent much time together as grandfather and grandson, and as co-workers on various jobs. Dick is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol; daughter, Shanna (Jeff) DeLong of Mt. Pleasant; grandson, Zack; and sister, Roberta Brisboy of Blanchard. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott Smillie; and two sisters, Mary Ann Ewell and Marcile Beeg. The family is extremely grateful to both Morey Cancer Center (where Dick forged wonderful friendships the past two years) and to Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care that Dick received. The family also sends a heartfelt thank you to family friend Christina Dubay for her incredible support and genuine compassion during Dick’s final days.
