Agnes Engler, 94, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at the The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. Agnes was born Dec. 4, 1921, the youngest of eight children born to Jacob and Agatha (Jenny) Neyer. After graduating from Beal City High School in 1939, she lived in New York City, Chicago and Miami working a variety of jobs. She was a nanny, airline stewardess and worked in a factory as one of the original Rosie the Riveters. She married Mathias Matt Engler on Jan. 10, 1948, at St. Philomena Church in Beal City. Together they raised seven children on their beef farm on West River Road. Agnes had many interests and talents. She was a great cook, an artist and an accomplished seamstress. She loved to travel and, with Matt, she visited Europe, Africa, Australia, and much of the United States. Agnes is survived by her seven children, John (Michelle) Engler of McLean, VA, Jim (Chris) Engler of Mt. Pleasant, Susan Engler of Mt. Pleasant, Nancy (Tom) Kleist of Orion, Ann (Kyle) Scott of Marne, Robert (Diana) Engler of Mt. Pleasant and Jean (John) Bigard of Mt. Pleasant; 19 grandchildren, five great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Mathias in 1992; her parents; three brothers, John, Frank and Tony; and four sisters, Matilda Leik, Frances Neyer, Mary Neyer, and Hedy Quillen. A Funeral Mass for Agnes will be celebrated on Monday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant. A luncheon will be served at Sacred Heart Parish Hall immediately following the church service. Burial will be in St. Joseph the Worker Cemetery in Beal City after the luncheon. The family will receive family and friends on Sunday, July 31 from 3-6 p.m. at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation continues at the church on Monday, one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Engler Family Scholarship through the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
