Alice Ruth Helms

Alice Ruth Helms passed away peacefully on September 8, 2021, at the age of 97. Alice was born April 14, 1924, in Big Rapids, Michigan, daughter of the late Otto and Louise (Kaminsky) Tetzlaff. She married Harry Helms on May 12, 1950, in Marshall, Michigan. Alice was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be missed dearly. Alice was a prominent member of the Mount Pleasant business community, owning and operating Helms Funeral Home for more than 30 years. She found great satisfaction in helping families through the loss of a loved one. She was a member of the Mt Pleasant Zonta Club, Rotary Club, Women's City Club, Chamber of Commerce, and was an avid fundraiser and donor for many other organizations that bettered the community. Alice was also a proud member of Zion Lutheran Church. She received numerous prestigious awards over the years including Heart of Gold (1985), Distinguished Citizenship Award (1991), Athena Award (1993), and Zonta Eagle Award (2000). Alice had a great sense of humor and was quick with witty one-liners. In 1983, two different friends gave her a Snoopy plaque that said, "Pick an age and stick with it." so she did. She picked 105 and was always ready to tell the story of why. While she unfortunately didn't make it quite that long, she lived a busy and full life, walking everywhere she could. Alice will be remembered for the love she gave to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her ability to make anyone laugh. She will forever be loved and in our hearts. A funeral service will be held in her honor at 11 a.m. Monday, September 13, 2021, at Zion Lutheran Church with pastors Jonathon Bakker and Garrick Beckett co-officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at the church. Alice will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery next to her husband, Harry. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Zonta Foundation for Women.
