Arlie R. Kindig, 78, of Shepherd passed away peacefully April 22, 2004 at Gratiot Community Hospital. His funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at Lux Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Burial will be in Salt River Cemetery in Shepherd. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Visitation continues on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until the service begins. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Arlie was born February 22, 1926, in Shepherd, the son of Cecil and Myrtle (Bryant) Kindig. He graduated from Shepherd High School and served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II. After an honorable discharge he took agricultural courses and farmed for many years in the Shepherd area. He also worked at Dow Chemical for 33 years before retiring. In his retirement he enjoyed antique cars and tractors, hunting, fishing, flower gardening, camping, and helping other family members farm. Arlie married Anna May Balcom in 1946. Together they had four children who survive him, including triplets, Gary (Debbie) Kindig of Spring Hill, TN, Gloria (Mike) Coffron of Saginaw, Gail (Phil) VanAcker of Shepherd, and daughter, Tammy (Steve) Cardona of Milan. After her death he married Helen Brookman in 1972. Helen survives him along with her five children, Linda (Larry) Pettit of White Pigeon, Sue Berchiatti of Mattawan, Jo Adkins of St. Louis, Deb (Chuck) Coleman of Ithaca, and Randy (Charlotte) Brookman of Sturgis. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Anna May Kindig; daughter, Linda Sue Kindig; brother, Melvin Kindig; sister, Sylvia Slater; and son-in-law, Tim Berchiatti.
