Betty Schafer, 87, of Beal City, passed away Monday, September 15, 2025, at Woodland Hospice. She was born March 10, 1938, in Isabella County, Michigan, the daughter of the late James and Lucille (Sage) Elkins.
A 1956 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Betty married Everett "Bub" Schafer on December 29, 1962, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.
She is survived by her four children, Wendy (Steve) Hovey of Beal City, Randall (Cathy) Schafer of Beal City, Catherine Cain of Jackson, Todd (Christine) Schafer of Beal City; 10 grandchildren, Jacob Hovey, Alex Schafer, Ethan Schafer, and Aaron Schafer (fiancé Mackenzie Smith), Hannah Cain, Hallie Cain (fiancée Michael Quitadamo), Lucas Cain, Eric Schafer, Ryan Schafer, and Ty Schafer; sister, Sally Bellinger of Mt. Pleasant; brother-in-law, Richard "Butch" Recker of Shepherd; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Everett "Bub" Schafer; son, Christopher Schafer; and six siblings, Robert Elkins, Donald Elkins, Barbara Recker, Richard Elkins, Mary Jane Elkins and Larry Elkins (infant).
A Funeral Mass for Betty will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 19, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with Father Andy LaFramboise as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, concluding with a luncheon at the Beal City Knights of Columbus Hall. The family will receive friends in the gathering room of the church on Thursday, September 18 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. with the Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continues on Friday one hour prior to Mass.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph the Worker School or Woodland Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the church or at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home.
