Brent Patrick O'Neil

Brent Patrick O’Neil, 52, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Born on November 28, 1973, in Alma, Michigan, Brent grew into a man whose spirit was rooted in the outdoors, strengthened by family and friends, and enriched by the beauty of simple living.

A 1992 graduate of Beal City High School, Brent continued his education at MJ Murphy Beauty College. He quickly became known as a talented hairdresser, owning and operating Brent’s Shear Magic, LLC. Later, Brent discovered a new passion as an arborist. His agility in the treetops and the name of his business inspired the nicknames Brent Wood and Squirrel—titles he wore with pride and humor.

Brent made his home in a rustic cabin, and spent many peaceful hours fishing, hunting, and tending to his vegetable garden. A close friend affectionately called him Farmer, a name that reflected the quiet happiness he found while caring for plants.

He also had a deep, natural affection for animals. Brent was one of the rare souls who didn’t mind when a sleepy bear cub chose his doorstep as a resting place. He happily put his climbing skills to use by rescuing cats stranded in trees and seemed to become instant friends with every dog he met.

Family gatherings were among Brent’s greatest joys. He delighted in helping prepare meals, baking cookies, playing his guitar, and bringing laughter to his nieces and nephews. His gentle spirit, quiet humor, and unwavering kindness will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know and love him.

Brent is lovingly held in the hearts of his parents, Ronald and Elaine O’Neil; his brother, Brian (Marella) O’Neil; and his sister, Bevin (Will Aiken) O’Neil, as well as his nephews, nieces, aunt, cousins, and many cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Marshall Forest and Lavonne O’Neil; his maternal grandparents, John and Viola Povilaitis; and the love of his life, Jamie Smith.

Brent’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, MI, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Jenni Liem officiating. The family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the service, and a luncheon will follow in the Lincoln Reception Center, attached to the funeral home. A gathering of family and friends will also take place on Friday, July 31, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the outreach programs at Annunciation of Our Lady Episcopal Church in Gurnee, IL, the Isabella County Animal Shelter, or a charity of your choice.
