Carl J. Schafer

Carl James Schafer, 80, of Beal City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on January 5, 1945, in Mt. Pleasant, Carl was one of six children of William J. and Blanche M. (Mead) Schafer. He graduated from Beal City High School in 1963 and remained a proud, lifelong member of the Beal City community. Carl grew up with strong family values, a deep work ethic, and a quiet strength that stayed with him throughout his life.

On January 31, 1970, Carl married the love of his life, Karen Hodgins, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Beal City. Together they built a loving home and shared many years of marriage until her passing in 2002.

Carl proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard and his sense of duty and patriotism was evident in how he lived and gave to others. He will be remembered as a devoted father, a hardworking man, and someone who took pride in his family and community.

He leaves behind his three children: Carl (Davette) Schafer, Misty Schafer, and Jason Schafer; six grandchildren, Ryan, Derek, Justin, Brett, Sean, and Abigail who carry forward his legacy with love and pride. He is also survived by his brother Herman Schafer and sister-in-law Rose Schafer.

A funeral service celebrating Carl's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home with Celebrant Michelle Sponseller officiating. A luncheon will follow at Lincoln Reception Center. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. and on Monday one hour before the service.

Those wishing to honor Carl's memory are invited to consider a contribution to the Future Farmers of America (FFA), a cause that reflects his values and love for the land. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Carl's quiet strength, steady presence, and the love he gave so freely will be dearly missed.
