Katie Nelson, 86, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Tendercare of Mt. Pleasant. A celebration of her life will be held at the Embers restaurant in Mt. Pleasant on Sunday at 2 p.m. with Dr. David Fry, President of Northwood University as Master of Ceremonies. Visitation will take place at Lux Funeral Home on Saturday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northwood University or the gift shop at Central Michigan Community Hospital. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Katie was born March 19, 1916, in Saginaw. She married George H. Nelson on Aug. 30, 1936. She worked at a variety of elementary schools in the central Michigan area during the 1950's and 1960's. She spent most of her career at Northwood University where initially she was an English instructor. She later became the Director of Student Personnel. But recently her heart was dedicated to the gift shop at Central Michigan Community Hospital. She spent many hours over a 15 year period volunteering her time there. She enjoyed walking, reading, and mother nature. Her optimistic attitude was an inspiration to the many lives she touched. Katie is survived by two sons, Geoff (Harriet) Nelson of Anapolis, MD and Paul (Bonnie) Nelson of Petoskey; three grandchildren, Laura (Doug) Johns, Andrew (Daisy) Nelson, and Amy (Chad) Geary; three great grandchildren; her sister, Hilda Brickel of Saginaw; and a sister-in-law, Harriet Stafford of Richland. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1965; a grandson, Steven Nelson; and two brothers, Ives Stafford and Jay Stafford.
