Charles Edward Ryan, formerly of Bay City, died suddenly at his home in Los Angeles, California on February 27, 2002. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 4, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bay City, Michigan at 11 a.m. with Father Raymond S. Fron officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to the Literacy Council of Bay County, 407 W. Ohio, Bay City, Michigan 48707. Charles was born February 12, 1951, in Michigan, the son of Charles Carroll and Ardith D. (DeVinney) Ryan. He was a graduate of All Saints Central High School, Aquinas College, and received his masters degree from the University of Chicago. He was retired from his position as Human Resources Director for the University of Illinois, Chicago Library of Health and Science. After living in Greece for three years he returned to Chicago before moving to Los Angeles where he worked as a free lance writer. Charles is survived by his mother, Ardith D. Ryan of Bay City; two brothers, Thomas (Patricia) Ryan of Mt. Pleasant, MI and Joseph Ryan of Farmington Hills, MI; four sisters, Louise Ryan and Patricia (William) Howard of Bay City, MI, Mary Sheneman of Essexville, MI and Kathleen Ryan of Chicago. He is also survived by his niece, Tatum Larson; five nephews, John Sheneman, Greg, Eric and Mark Ryan, and Austin Howard; and his best friends, Mary Beth McCarthy, Steve Bartek, and their children, Christopher and Ketra Bartek of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Carroll Ryan; and nephew, Kevin M. Ryan.
