Charles Johnson, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, and formerly of Lansing, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023, at Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. Chuck was born August 6, 1937, in Lansing, Michigan, son of the late Charles Oliver and Ellen Louise (Barratt) Johnson. He graduated from Lansing Sexton in 1955 and, from 1961-1963, served his country in the U.S. Army. Stationed in Fort Belvoir in Virginia for 2 years, Chuck was a stand-out athlete who played five different sports while in the Army. He was a starter in all the sports and won four different sport championships, finishing runner-up in the fifth. On May 22, 1965, he married the love of his life, Ruth McDonald in a ceremony at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. Chuck spent 37 years with an architectural and engineering firm, Fishbeck, retiring as a Senior Associate. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and former member of St. Gerard Parish in Lansing, serving as lector and usher. An avid sports fan, Chuck was a former coach of Little League Baseball and youth basketball in Lansing. He enjoyed golfing and traveling, however, nothing gave him greater pleasure than being in the company of his family. Chuck is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Johnson; four children, Elizabeth "Beth" (Richard Hintze) Johnson of Brooklyn, NY, Barratt "Barry" (Lynn Duval) Johnson of Kennesaw, GA, Lori Johnson of South Bend, IN, and John (Karri Allen) Johnson of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Claire and Jack, Barratt Jr., Hailey and Ashley, and Ellie and Charles; sister, Patricia Schoepke of Charlotte, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother in-law, Doris and Robert Heinritz; brother, Barratt Johnson; brother in-law, Herb Schoepke; and niece, Kathy Heinritz. Chuck's family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Monday, August 28, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with the Vigil Service and time for sharing beginning at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass for Chuck will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass. Following Mass, the committal service and military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant where Chuck's ashes will be laid to rest. All are invited to a luncheon at Lincoln Reception Center (attached to the funeral home). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lansing's Old News Boys or Sacred Heart Parish.
