Cornelius "Connie" M. Halter

Cornelius M. "Connie" Halter, age 99.87, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Dearborn, Michigan passed away peacefully Sunday, December 13, 2020, at his home in his grandson's arms while nurse Heidi was bathing him. He was born January 28, 1921, in Oran, Missouri the eldest child of Lawrence and Clara (Lux) Halter.  Connie attended Guardian Angel Catholic School in Oran, Missouri.  As a teenager he and his brothers, Herman and Jim, worked on local farms to help support their family.  Growing up during the depression sent Connie, at the age of 16, to work in the Civilian Conservation Corp to continue to support his family.  He worked two years with the Corp, learning early on that after three months you could move to another camp. He spent time working in the states of Idaho, Alabama, Montana, and South Dakota. This was his way of seeing the country, traveling by train.  While in the camp he would receive one dollar a day for his work and at the end of the month the government sent $25 to his family and he was able to keep $5. He proudly joined the United States Navy in 1942, serving during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. Connie spent one and half years overseas on a PT boat, call sign CB1 (Charlie Baker 1), which traveled throughout the Sea of Saipan, responding to distress calls from any servicemen in the surrounding area that needed help. Connie married Agnes "Nancy" Wood on December 9, 1950, in Redford, Michigan.  They settled in Dearborn and there, Connie began working for Famous Upholsterers, learning the skills of upholstery. In 1960 he bought Bonnell Furniture and operated the business until 1973. He was a frequent booth renter at the Saline summer flea markets selling his beautiful furniture restorations. In 1989 he and his wife, Nancy, settled in Mt. Pleasant where he continued his love of antiquing and upholstering. He was a master at refinishing antiques and traditional furniture and his skills were second to none, except to those of his brother, Herman, who upholstered in St. Louis, Missouri, whom Connie privately said was the best in the family. Today many of his family members are still enjoying his pieces of furniture which are proudly displayed in many Lux Funeral Homes in Central Michigan. Connie was also a proud and faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 60 years throughout the Detroit and Central Michigan areas helping many young men and woman with their addiction. To quote one of his fellow AA Members, Chris, "Connie was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened." As Connie's mom lived to be 101, his goal was always to live until at least 100 and even surpass her. With the loving care provided by his granddaughter Pam over the last 4 years, Connie nearly succeeded. Though he fell just short of his goal, the treasures Connie left behind will be remembered for years to come. Connie is survived by a sister, Jermaine Hurst and baby brother, Norman (Hanne) Halter, both of Wind Crest, TX; grandchildren, Paul (Beth) Lux, Pamela Lux, Jennifer (Mike) Mills, Matthew Lux, Lyle (Sue) Lux, Edith (Mark) Richardson, Charlie (Minde) Lux, Marie Churnawoski, Dan (Peggy) Wesner, Charlie Wesner, Robin Wesner, Richard Wesner, Mary (John Sabo) Wesner, and Nancy (Link) Rice; and many great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; daughter, Mary "Fritz" Wesner; son and daughter in-law, Charles R. Lux, Sr. and Nancy Lux; grandsons, Stephan Lux and Robert Wesner; great grandson, Michael Shoe; great-great grandson, Nolan Drain; and siblings, Herman, Jim, Leroy, and Bobby Halter, Irene Halter, Adele Horman, and Betty Sadler.
