David J. Goffnett

David J. Goffnett, 60, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Denis Heames presiding. Friends may call at the Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., on Saturday and Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the Mass begins. The Vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Cancer Services of Isabella County(P.O. Box 36, Mt. Pleasant MI 48804-0036), Pardee Cancer of Isabella County (c/o Central Michigan Community Hospital, 1221 S. Dr. Mt. Pleasant MI 48858), or Sacred Heart Parish (302 S. Kinney, Mt. Pleasant MI 48858). Envelopes are available at the funeral home. David was born May 6, 1948, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Robert C. and Mabel (Angle) Goffnett. A graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in 1966, David married Emily Gould on Oct. 12, 1968 at Sacred Heart Church. He worked for Dow Chemical from 1967-1972 and the City of Mt. Pleasant from 1972-2002, retiring as superintendent of the Waste Water Treatment Facility. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Exchange Club, Elks Club, and a card and dance club. Some of his favorite pastimes included reading, following Detroit sports, and outdoors related activities such as fishing, hunting, reading, traveling, touring waterfalls, lakes and lighthouses, bird watching, elk searching, snowmobiling, tubing down the river, canoeing, and kayaking. But of all these activities, nothing compared to his love for his grandchildren. David is survived by his wife of 40 years, Emily; three children, Chris (Luanne) Goffnett and Sean (Angela) Goffnett, both of Mt. Pleasant and Rebecca (Garret) Salter of Lake Isabella; 11 grandchildren, Noelle, Skylar, Chloe, Chase, Scout, and Colten Goffnett, Hunter, Peyton, and Jacob Goffnett, and Ariel and Hayden Salter; eight siblings, Robert (Marge) Goffnett and Marilyn (Roland) Trayer, both of Mt. Pleasant, Bill (Sherry) Goffnett of Coleman, Rose (Fred) DuBois, Beverly (Mike) Vance, Greg (Marie Annie ) Goffnett, and Kevin Goffnett, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Karen (Chris) Brown of Yakima, WA; his father-in-law, Don Gould of Mt. Pleasant; three brothers-in-law, Larry Machuta of Mt. Pleasant, Rich Wojciechowicz of Sterling Heights, and Fred (Delores) Gould of Beal City; and his sister-in-law, Priscilla Adams of Mt. Pleasant. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert (2006) and Mabel (1982); two sisters, Sharon Machuta (2006) and Denise Wojciechowicz (2008); nephew, Jeremy Sponseller (2007); mother-in-law, Dorothy Gould (2002); and two brothers-in-law, James Gould (1995) and William Quincy Adams (2006).
