In Loving Memory of David Merwin Nichols, who passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026. David was born July 9, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of C.M. and Margaret Nichols. David graduated from Western Michigan University in 1962. David served in the U.S. Army Reserves before starting Nichols Financial Group with his wife of 63 years, Marilyn (Michaels), in 1968. During his time in Alma, Michigan, he was a member of the United Methodist Church. David also contributed to “Think First” a national program providing bicycle helmets and education to prevent spinal cord and head injuries for the third graders of Gratiot County. David also served as a Board of Directors member for the Field Neurosciences Institute, participating in many events to provide funding for Huntington’s disease and glioblastoma research. David had a charm that would lead to a captivating and thoughtful conversation. He was so open, warm, and kind, striking up conversations with perfect strangers. David’s superpower was making everyone feel welcome and loved.
David and Marilyn spent many years vacationing in Northern Michigan with their two sons, Jon (Jennifer) and Kevin (Jodie Emerson). David is survived by his wife, two loving sons, and Natalie, his only granddaughter. Also survived by his brother Bill (the late Dace) Nichols; nephews Bill and John; sister-in-law Nancy Hall; and brother-in-law Danny Michaels. David was also an uncle to Shannon (Rob) Nagy, Angel (Terry) Wheeler, and Brandon (Robin) Town. David had many wonderful relationships with the Weast and Romisher families and Jerry Beard (deceased), Mark Butcher, and Ray Updegraff. David also had a great rapport with Kelly Priest, Dave Harrison (deceased), Julayne Swanson, and Lou Priest, those that worked with him at Nichols Financial Group before retiring in 2009.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
