Denis Walterreit, 72, died March 29, 2011, at Masonic Pathways in Alma, from complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. A Memorial Service will be held in Doig Chapel at Masonic Pathways in Alma on Thursday, May 12 at 3:00 p.m. Denis was born and raised in Toledo, OH, son of the late Fred and Irma (Montgomery) Walterreit. He was a graduate of Toledo Libby High School, Wittenberg University, Hamma School of Divinity and Detroit College of Law. He married Linda Clark on June 1, 1963. They became parents of Janice (John) Terry of Mt. Pleasant and Denis John Jay (Stephanie) Walterreit of Alpena; and grandparents of Calvin, Cooper, Coral, Adam and Rachel Terry. Denis served as pastor of Lutheran churches in Greenville and Trenton. He provided interim pastoral services throughout Michigan until shortly before this death. He established law practices in Woodhaven and Mt. Pleasant. He was dedicated to helping people as a spiritual counselor and a legal counselor. His role as Tribal Court Judge for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in Mt. Pleasant was one of his most fulfilling life experiences. Denis was an imaginative, hopeful, cheerful, caring, patient husband, father and friend. He envisioned and achieved goals that created interesting and secure lives for his family. He was an active, athletic person who loved golf, his farm, planting trees, animals, friends, especially high school friends, his tractors, traveling and new adventures. He never stopped trying, dreaming, and planning of the future. His courage will remain an inspiration to those who knew him.
