Donald C. Smith
Donald C. Smith, age 88, of Weidman went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 23, 2017.
Don was born on June 14, 1929 to Will J. and Hermonie (Rummel) Smith in Mount Pleasant, MI. He grew up in the Weidman area and graduated from the Weidman Schools. On July 17, 1954 Don married Louise M. Kische at St. Philomena's Catholic Church in Beal City. Don retired from Central Michigan University working in the Maintenance Department. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
Don served his country in the Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He was very patriotic and loved flying the flag. He spent over 20 years as Sherman Township Constable. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching sports on TV; especially the Tigers & Lions. Working in his flower garden and growing vegetables for the family was one of his favorite pastimes. Don especially loved spending time with his family and friends.
Don is survived by his wife, Louise; children, Joyce (William) Ziegler, Mary (Moses Keith) Smith – Dennis, David (Zetta) Smith, Joseph (Amy) Smith, Peter (Karen) Smith, Thomas (Cheryl) Smith, Michael (Holly) Smith, Alice (David) Goodall, Angela (Douglas) Benchley & Luke (Jennifer) Smith; 26 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and with 2 on the way; brothers, Robert & Richard and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helen Alwood and brother, Walter Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday, October 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 2163 N. Winn Rd, Mt. Pleasant, MI. 48858 with Father Thomas Held as celebrant. The Christian ceremony will includefull military honors. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. A visitation for Don will be on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the gathering room at the church with a Rosary starting at 7:30 p.m. Burial will take place after the service at St. Joseph Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the KC Hall.
Memorial donations in Don's honor may be made to the Nottawa & Sherman Township Fire Department or Chippewa Hills School – Weidman Elementary.Envelopes will be available at the church and funeral home.
