Douglas Michael Phillips

The world lost a vibrant spirit with the passing of Douglas Michael Phillips on July 30, 2026, just one day after his 65th birthday. Born on July 29, 1961, Douglas spent his life filling every day with laughter, camaraderie, and an irresistible passion for living, qualities that will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Douglas was a proud graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, class of 1979, and he carried the lessons and friendships formed there throughout his life. Dedicated and reliable, Douglas devoted an incredible 37 years to Delfield as a finish grinder, a career choice that speaks to his steadfast nature and unwavering commitment. Through decades of service, his reputation as a tireless worker, a problem-solver, and a good-humored colleague was well-earned.

But it is the story of Douglas’s heart his family, friendships, and colorful passions that truly echoes with power. He is survived by Mary, the loving wife, of 40 years, who shared in his journey and embraced every twist and turn alongside him. His legacy continues brightly in his children: Kaleb (Chloe) Phillips of Grand Rapids; Jorden (boyfriend, Lonnie Morrow) Phillips of Edmore; Kirstyn (boyfriend, Austin Salsberry) Phillips of Mt. Pleasant; and Jacob (Ellery) Phillips of Schereville, IN. The love he poured into his family flourished, extending to his beloved grandchildren: Dekyn, Farrah, Ellianna, twins, Grayson and Lawson, Alexandra, Matteo, Eloise, and Esther, each a cherished part of his life. Douglas also leaves behind his brother, Ronald Phillips of Mt. Pleasant

Douglas is reunited now with his father, Rodney Phillips; Mother, Betty (William) Kennedy; infant brother, Steven; brothers Rodney "Rocky", David, and Brian. Their memory wove through his life, and their love stood as a guiding light a legacy he, in turn, nurtured in his own family.

A man defined by genuine friendliness, Douglas’s embrace of the world was unwavering. He had an uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, leaving friends new and old with stories and laughter to treasure. Stubborn and competitive, with a gentle humor and a fierce devotion to family, he was always up for a challenge on the field or off.

Sports were at the core of Douglas’s soul. From golfing, fast-pitch softball, bowling, watching any sport with an exceptional fondness for the Michigan Wolverines, and Detroit sports, to squaring off in cornhole and horseshoes even in leisure, he chased excellence. His competitive nature shone with two exceptional hole-in-ones while golfing in league play and through twenty diligent years as an assistant coach, especially proud to coach for his sons. His innovative passion for play even inspired “monster golf” an 18-hole course he created in his own yard with softballs and bats a testament to his inventive and joyful approach to life.

Simple pleasures brought Douglas immense joy: kayaking on the pond with friends, riding his e-bike around town, spending tranquil hours out back on his deck in the company of his beloved wife Mary and three loyal dogs Miguel, Max, and Henne. Together with a cold red apple ale in hand, these moments of peace and companionship became part of the structure of his days.

Douglas’s story is, at its heart, a celebration of connection. His warmth and wit stitched together a community of friends and family who now carry his memory forward, with laughter, with a competitive spark, and with loyalty to the ones we hold dear. In every game played, every story shared, and every summer evening on the deck, Douglas Michael Phillips will be remembered and cherished.

A Funeral Mass for Douglas will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, August 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Adam Mahar presiding. A luncheon at Lincoln Reception Center will immediately follow. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Friday one hours before Mass. 

Family is asking that everyone who attends to please wear your favorite sports attire.
