Douglas Smith, 88, of Ludington, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. His memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Connie Bongard of Farwell United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred next to his wife, Alice, at Heavenly Rest Cemetery in Kawkawlin. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Hospice, 2597 S. Meridian Rd., Mt. Pleasant MI 48858, American Cancer Society, or Disabled American Veterans. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Douglas was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Detroit, the son of Charles and Hedvig (Peterson) Smith. He moved to Muskegon with his mother and brother during the Depression and graduated from Muskegon Heights. He attended junior college and then enlisted in the Marines, serving in World War II throughout the Pacific. After a medical discharge, he returned, met, and married Alice Halligan on July 9, 1947, at Samuel Lutheran Church in Muskegon. She preceded him in death on March 28, 2009, after nearly 62 years of marriage. He worked for and retired from Dow Chemical in Ludington in 1977 after 21 years. He enjoyed many years of retirement camping with Alice and visiting his family. He loved his cat, fishing, and reading. Douglas is survived by his children, Jan (Nick) Alfano of Shepherd, Roger (Sue) Smith of Norton Shores; grandchildren, Chad (Heather) Tubbs, Christie Smith, Scott Smith, Brandon Smith, Shelley (Phillip) Spicer, and Nick (Sharon) Alfano; great-grandchildren, Damian Tubbs, Avery Tubbs, Nick Alfano, and Riley Alfano; brother, Burt (Shirley) Smith of Shelby Township; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and brother and sister-in-law, Stan and Marge Smith.
