"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; ... And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over" John Masefield
Ed Hustoles was truly a man engaged with the world. Equally passionate about civil rights, liberal politics, and sports, he will be remembered for his astonishing intelligence, his sly humor, and his far-ranging curiosity. Born in Chicago, Ed was a man of the big city. After serving in World War II, Ed and family moved to Detroit. Few people knew metro Detroit as well, or worked as hard to make it better. After a 40 year career as a community planner, one colleague said, "Ed Hustoles has been our designated dreamer. He enriched us. He challenged us. He made each and all of us better. That is his legacy, and we honor and deeply appreciate his presence in our lives."
He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Mary Catherine, and children Paul (Mary Jo) Hustoles, Mary Beth Hustoles and Barb (Don Smith) Hustoles, and daughter-in-law Carol Hustoles. His eldest son Tom (Carol) Hustoles preceded him in death last year. Fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren and even one great great grandchild ensure his benefaction of love and engagement continues.
Please don't send flowers. Memorials in Ed's name can be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, or by doing something to help make the world a kinder and more just place.
The family is especially thankful to The Care Team Home Health and Hospice and Green Acres of Mt. Pleasant. To sign the online guest book or leave a condolence for the family please visit www.CharlesRLux.com.
