Erna Christine Marquardt

Erna Marquardt, age 90, of Mt Pleasant, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 21, 2021. Erna was born in Germany on September 19, 1930, daughter of the late August and Erna (Mistler) Klein.  She was a teacher in Germany when she met her husband, Edward T. Marquardt. Edward was a principal at the American Army base at the time. They were involved in a collaborative effort between the German and American Schools to promote friendship between their respective countries.  That effort led to more than friendship between the two, and they were married in Ravengiersburg, Germany on February 28, 1960.  The couple moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1962 where Erna obtained her Master's degree in French Literature at the University of Michigan. Erna worked for the Department of Education for many years as a dedicated and innovative teacher. She taught French and German at the Mt. Pleasant High School from 1970-1982. Then she switched gears and taught Kindergarten at Fancher Elementary School from 1982-1995. She taught some of her high school students' children in Kindergarten, which she got a real kick out of.  Whenever Erna was out and about in Mt. Pleasant, she would meet her former students and they would chat.  It was an exciting day when she became a citizen of the United States in 1973. She loved the landscape of Michigan with its beautiful lakes and dunes, fields, and forests.  When she had free time, she enjoyed playing Bridge and playing the piano.  She was an avid reader and a member of a book club for decades.  But most of all, she loved to talk and anyone who stopped by her house was invited in for conversation and refreshment. Her favorite topic was her faith and what her Savior, Jesus Christ did for her.  Erna is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Nancy Vigil (Aaron) and Nicole Fender (Mark). She has 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  Erna's funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 25, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home and will be streamed live on the funeral home's Facebook page. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Erna will be laid to rest in Coomer Cemetery in Deerfield Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or the charity of your choice.
