Evelyn Simons, 97, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Green Acres Assisted Living with her family by her side. Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass for Evelyn will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant. A luncheon will follow at Sacred Heart Parish Hall. Interment of her ashes will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-7:30 p.m. with the rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Friday one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Simons Memorial Scholarship Fund or MidMichigan Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home or church. Evelyn was born February 7, 1921, in Logansport, IN, daughter of the late George and Mary (Wicker) Wiegand. She married John Simons on December 26, 1942, in Indiana. Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and worked as a receptionist at the City of Mt. Pleasant for 15 years, retiring in 1985. Evelyn was an avid basketball fan, having played in high school. She was particularly a fan of Sacred Heart Academy and Michigan State University, the Detroit Bad Boys, Bobby Knight and Tom Izzo. Kindly leave your Jordans at the door was a favorite phrase of hers. She enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers (especially Miguel Cabrera) and leaves behind decades of celebrity boyfriends (Tom Selleck, Monk, Sidney Poitier, to name a few). The light of her life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Evelyn is survived by six children, Mark Simons of Interlochen, Daniel (Jill) Simons, Margaret (Kip) Wood, and Joseph (Mary Lynn) Simons, all of Mt. Pleasant, David (Judy) Simons of Cadillac, and Cecilia (David) Jerome of Midland; daughter-in-law, Karen; 18 grandchildren, Dawn Simons and Jayson Simons, Kevin (Amy) Simons and Samantha Simons, Katie (Steve) Pahner, Molly (Steve) Shimek, and Adam Simons, Jake Simons, Zach (Kristina) Simons, and Caleb (Sara Jane) Simons, Jim (Janelle) Wood, Abby Wood, and Alex Wood, Ben (Ashley) Simons, and John Simons, and Andy (Tori) Jerome and Emily Jerome; seven great grandchildren, Claire, Ellie, Andy, Will, and Charlie; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John (1996); sons, Andy (1980), Jay (1989) and Mike (2003); and brothers, Fraunce, Andy, George, and Larry Wiegand.
