Florence Nub Schafer, 92, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility. A Funeral Mass for Florence will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 4, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Beal City with Father Thomas Held as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery concluding with a luncheon at the Beal City Knights of Columbus Hall. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Thursday one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Isabella County Medical Care Facility (activities department), St. Joseph Church, or charity of the donors choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home or church. Florence was born October 31, 1925, in Beal City, daughter of the late Michael and Mary Minnie (Neff) Finnerty. A graduate of Beal City High School, Florence married Howard Schafer on August 17, 1946, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Beal City. Florence was a stay-at-home mom, raising seven children. She was able to find time to work as a nurses aide for 19 years at the State Home, retiring in 1987. She was a member of both St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Beal City and Sacred Heart Parish in Mt. Pleasant. Some of her favorite pastimes were quilting, crocheting, bingo, and playing cards. She loved her family dearly. Florence is survived by seven children, Daniel (Carol) Schafer of Beaverton, Peter (Patty) Schafer of Watsonville, CA, Pam (Fred) Sponseller of Farwell, Harv (Marge) Schafer of Mt. Pleasant, Jeff Schafer of Mt. Pleasant, Ernie Schafer of Spartanburg, SC, and Eric (Hazel) Schafer of Mt. Pleasant; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Mary Finnerty; step-father, Ernest Pohl; husband, Howard (1986); infant son, Gregory (1959); and sisters, Agnes Schafer (1990) and Blanche Pung (2010). The Schafer Family is grateful to the Isabella County Medical Care Facility for all the kindness that was shown to Florence in all the time in which she was a resident of the facility.
