Frederick M. Streng

Fred Streng, 90, of Beal City, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant. Fred was born June 5, 1932, in Saginaw County, Michigan, son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Andres) Streng. In 1940 his family moved to his grandparents' farm in Beal City. A 1950 graduate of Beal City High School, he worked on his dad's farm until he was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1954. He served during the Korean Conflict, spending most of his time in Germany as a tank driver and mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1956. That same year he began working for the State Home in Mt. Pleasant. He retired as the laundry manager in 1992 after 36 years of employment.  On November 30, 1957, he married the love of his life, Patricia Faber, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Beal City. Fred was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and belonged to the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus Council 3651 where he was a past Grand Knight. In addition, he taught Religious Education, was on the building committee, and was one of the first Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Fred's Catholic faith was very important to him. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, gardening, playing cards (at which he loved to win), woodworking, and making many wooden items for his children and grandchildren. Fred was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and cherished the many family gatherings. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 65 years, Patricia; 10 children, Donald (Teressa) Streng of Ann Arbor, James (Michelle) Streng of Beal City, Keith (Kim) Streng of Commerce Township, Tom (Sharon) Streng of Indian Rocks Beach, FL, Luann (Christopher) Desautel of San Rafael, CA, Rose (David) Buczkowski of Sparta, Mary (Greg) Franz of Johnstown, OH, Paul (Rebecca) Streng of Rochester Hills, Kenneth (Dave Howland) Streng of Novi, and Sheryl (Brian) Coltson of Midland; 20 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Maxine (Bob) Finnerty of Beal City and Geraldine (Dick) Schafer of Beal City; brothers in-law, Rod Vogler of Auburn Hills and Frederick (Erma) Faber of Grand Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Dorothy Streng, paternal grandparents, Michael and Elizabeth Streng; maternal grandparents, Peter and Mary Andres; sisters, Vera Vogler and Patricia Fate; brother in-law, Bob Fate; and sister in-law, Joan Faber. A Funeral Mass for Fred will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 23, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Beal City with Father Thomas Held as celebrant. Following the committal at St. Joseph Cemetery, all are invited to a luncheon at the Beal City Knights of Columbus Hall.
