Garret Scott O'Berski

Garret Scott O'Berski unexpectedly passed away January 9, 2024, due to natural causes, in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He was born to Dennis and Anita O'Berski on March 31, 1978.  He grew up and lived most of his life in Cass City.

Garret was a graduate of Cass City High School, class of 1996. During his childhood, he liked to play baseball with the neighbors, and as he got older, he enjoyed following the Detroit Tiger's each season. Growing up, he was very passionate about ancient history and Greek mythology and was part of his school's Academic Track team. While in high school, Garret joined his cross-country team, and in '95 even ran The Crim in Flint. He was an avid reader throughout his life and would read books ranging from The Grapes of Wrath to Lord of the Rings.  He also had a true love of music and attended many concerts with friends and family over the years, saving each and every ticket stub.

Garret was a firm believer in a dog being man's best friend and was oftentimes seen out walking his 17-year-old dog, Gromit.

Though he remained a lifelong bachelor, Garret was a beloved uncle to his nephew Diedrick, niece Delilah, and step-nephew Evan. Even though they may have worn down his energy at times, his patience was in plentiful supply.

Garret faced many battles in his life.  He overcame childhood cancer at the age of 3 and was later diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young man.  ‍In spite of this, Garret had an endless positive spirit, and was always willing to lend a listening ear to others.  His gentle and easy-going nature had him making friends wherever he'd go.

Garret is predeceased by his mother Anita O'Berski, and father Dennis O'Berski.  He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Dave Westhaus; niece Delilah; nephews Diedrick and Evan; his supportive aunts and uncles Kathy Kelly, Diane (Ron) Adrianse, Ken (Chris) O'Berski, and Ross (Linda) Scott; and many loving cousins, family, and friends, as well as his devoted dog, Gromit.

A private gathering with family and friends will happen at a later date.

In memory of Garret, please listen to your favorite song from high school with the volume turned up just a little too loud.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

–J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
