Gene Eloise Battjes

Gene Battjes, 99, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on August 16, 2022, at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant, just three months shy of her 100 ^th birthday.  Gene was born on November 16, 1922, daughter of the late Walter and Beryl (Briggs) Tucker in Blanchard. She graduated high school in Grand Rapids in 1940. Gene attended Butterworth Hospital's nursing program before marrying Clarence Battjes in Grand Rapids on December 18, 1943.  Together Clarence and Gene raised four children, Diana, Henry, Robert, and Judy in Portage Michigan. Gene enjoyed traveling, birdwatching, reading.  After Clarence's death in 1978, she became involved in a senior learning program, Elderhostel - Road Scholar, where she made many friendships.  Gene will be missed by so many.  She is survived by her children, Diana (Richard) Moreau of Weidman, Henry (Carol) Battjes of Hawaii, Robert (Penny) Battjes of Florida and Judy (Darrell) Kenyon of Glennie; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by, both parents; husband, Clarence; siblings, Beatrice, Marie, Mavis, Walter and Ramona.  Per Gene's wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor.
