Gerald D. Campbell

Gerald Campbell, 95, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, October 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Monday one hour prior to the Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Academy Foundation. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Jerry was born February 23, 1916, in Mt. Pleasant, son of the late Joseph and Virgil (Flint) Campbell. He graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1935 and was inducted into its Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. He married Pauline Codden on September 9, 1939, at Sacred Heart Church. For 24 years he worked as a chemist at Dow Chemical, retiring in 1978. Prior to that, he was employed by Crystal Ice Company for 16 years. Jerry was instrumental in the construction of Community Memorial Stadium in Mt. Pleasant. Some of his favorite pastimes were coaching, refereeing, and woodworking. Jerry is survived by his wife of 72 years, Pauline Campbell; daughter, Karen (Gale) Travis of Port Sanilac; son, John (Linda) Campbell of Lake; seven grandchildren, Tim, Denise, Christina and Elizabeth and Aaron, Steve and Jessica; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Louise Hively of Canadian Lakes; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Campbell of Mt. Pleasant and Jackie Campbell of Shepherd. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arden and Jim Campbell; granddaughter, Andrea Campbell Sherman; and a grandson, Colton Sherman.
