Gretchen E. David, 85, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Saturday, October 12, 2002 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Rosebush with Father Jerry Neidermier and Sister Mary Ellen McDonald officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Beal City. Friends may call at Lux Funeral Home on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Visitation continues at the church on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Childrens Hospital or to St. Henry Church. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Gretchen was born October 21, 1916, in Beal City, the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Fitzgerald) Smith. She married Arthur David on October 19, 1935, at Sacred Heart Church in Mt. Pleasant. She was employed at Central Michigan Community Hospital for 32 years as a nurses aid and ward clerk. She retired in 1977. She was a member of St. Henry Church and enjoyed crocheting, reading, and taking care of her many plants. Gretchen is survived by three children, Eileen (Robert) Sharp of Weidman, Clarence (Faye) David of Traverse City, and Ronald (Marcia) David of Mt. Pleasant; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; one brother, Bernard T. (Joann) Smith of Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Lenora Ludwig of Defiance, OH, Josephine Cuthbert of Flint and Mary Lou Smith of Mecosta; three sisters-in-law, Harriet Smith of Beal City, Jean Smith of Virginia and Alice Smith of Alma; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Eva Smith; her husband, Art David on Dec. 13, 2000; three brothers, Edward Smith, Lyle Smith and Earl Smith; and two sisters, Kathryn Breuer and Freida Price.
