John Philip Warriner, 83, passed away on December 28, 2024, in Longmont, Colorado. Born on January 28, 1941, in Nyack, New York, John pursued a lifelong passion for science and education. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1963 and went on to obtain a doctorate in chemistry from Loyola University of Chicago in 1967. His dedication to teaching led him to Central Michigan University, where he spent 33 and a half years inspiring students as a chemistry professor. One of John's fondest memories was working seven summers as a park ranger on Lake George, New York. His love for nature continued throughout his life, as he found joy in walking through Mt. Pleasant's parks, watching sunsets and clouds, and buying flowers for his wife. An avid golfer, he cherished time spent on the course with his buddies. Music was another great passion—he sang bass in the choir at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he and his wife Sandy held hands while reciting the Lord's Prayer. John's sense of humor was both sly and goofy, bringing laughter to those around him. He had a deep affection for animals, especially pet cats that became part of his family over the years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sandy Warriner; his son Arthur Warriner of Hokkaido, Japan; his daughter Heidi Warriner of Louisville, Colorado; his brother Stephen Warriner of Ypsilanti, Michigan; and his sisters Gail Warriner of Nova Scotia, Canada, and Susan Yabamoto of Ruidoso, New Mexico.
A celebration of John's life will be held on June 1, 2025, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan (320 S. Bradley). The Sunday morning service at 10:00 a.m. will honor John's love for music and flowers while recognizing the kindness always shown at Immanuel. At 11:30 a.m., lunch will provide an opportunity for friends and family to share stories and laughter in remembrance of John. Memorial contributions can be made to Woodland Hospice.
