Joseph E. Campbell, a beloved father, husband, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully after a short but courageous battle with ALS on November 9, 2025, at the age of 78. He was surrounded by his loving family in Alexandria, Virginia.
Born on April 14, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Joe was the eldest of seven children born to Joseph "Arden" and Patricia (Fitzgerald) Campbell. Joe attended Sacred Heart Academy and Central Michigan University. He was a dedicated civil servant for over 40 years, working for both the Department of Defense and the Office of Personal Management. After retirement, Joe pursued his passions of traveling, spending time with family, and exploring fine dining. He loved vintage cars and all exceptional wines. Joe's greatest passion was spending time with his two granddaughters, who will miss him dearly.
Joe is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Susan Palmer, his two children, Maren (Joshua) Novotney and Patrick Campbell, and two granddaughters, Maggie and Libby. He also leaves behind his siblings, Michael (Sheila) Campbell, Thomas (Kathy) Campbell, Timothy (Tammy) Campbell, Catherine Campbell, and Kevin (Lisa) Campbell; and sister-in-law, Deb Campbell. He was predeceased by his mother and father as well as his younger brother, William.
Joe's legacy of dry humor, quips, hard work, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A Funeral Mass for Joseph will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 22, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Irishtown with Father Loren Kalinowski presiding. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery concluding with a luncheon in the adjacent parish hall. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to Mass.
