Josephine was born July 31, 1915, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of the late Walter and Theresa (Remarchek) Kwiatkowski. She left the family farm to go to Grand Haven High School and on to St. Marys Nursing School in Grand Rapids. As a registered Nurse she worked at U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor for a short time. She was working in St. Marys when she decided to join the war effort and enter the service. She was involved in the Pacific Theatre and was stationed on Guam and Saipan. She often mentioned that was one of the happiest times of her life. After returning home from the service she met and married Howard Hartung. They moved from Grand Rapids to Mt. Pleasant where Josephine worked at the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center until she retired. Josephine enjoyed working along with Howard. Together they built four homes. She also enjoyed reading, feeding and watching birds and her Sheltie, Meghan. She was a member of the VFW Post 3033 and SERA. Her name is on the wall in Washington DC honoring the women in the Army Nurse Corp. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. Josephine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Ron Griffiths; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Parkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard in 1981; brothers, Walter, Louis and Donald Kwiatkowski; and sisters, Leona Mishler and Agnes Peckens.
