Karen A. Schafer, 51, of Beal City passed away Monday, December 2, 2002, at Central Michigan Community Hospital. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Lux Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Vredeveld officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service begins. There is no visitation on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to HATS (Humane Animal Treatment Society) or to American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Karen was born May 8, 1951, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Harold William and Fern Eloise (Utterback) Hodgins. She married Carl Schafer Sr. on January 31, 1970, at St. Joseph Church in Beal City. She was an accounting technician at the Mt. Pleasant Center since 1980. Prior to that she had worked for the State of Michigan Unemployment offices in Clare and Alma. Karen enjoyed working with arts and crafts, including stained glass and embroidery. She collected antiques and china and was known to be a history buff. She was a union steward with UAW Local 6000. Karen is survived by her husband, Carl Schafer, Sr. of Beal City; three children, Carl (Davette) Schafer, Jr. of Farwell, Misty Schafer of Mt. Pleasant and Jason Schafer of Beal City; five grandchildren, Ryan, Derek, Justin, Brett and Sean; two sisters, Marcia Bullard of Lansing, Kathleen (Scott) Cole of Mt. Pleasant; and her brother, Bill (Chris) Hodgins of Adrian. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter.
