Kelly Lynn Sowmick, 67, passed away on July 14, 2026, after a lifelong battle with kidney disease.
She was born on September 11, 1959, in St. Petersburg, Florida, to William "Bert" and Kathryn (Aldridge) Sewell.
Kelly spent much of her childhood traveling and was raised in Australia, where she developed a love of surfing. She was highly intelligent, a talented artist, and studied fashion design in college. In the late 1970s, her family moved to Houston, Texas, where she began adulthood and welcomed her first two children in 1983 and 1985. They then spent a year in Kansas City before settling in central Michigan in 1988.
In the late 1980s, Kelly worked in the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's card room, where she met her future life partner, Steven Ray Sowmick. They began their life together in 1990 and shared 34 years together. In 1996, they welcomed their son. During the late 1990s, Kelly and Steven created a series of Ojibwe language coloring books, a project she remained especially proud of.
Kelly was a private person with a creative spirit, and she will be remembered for her intelligence, artistic talent, and resilience. She also had a green thumb and loved to garden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William "Bert" and Kathryn (Aldridge) Sewell, and by her husband, Steven Ray Sowmick.
She is survived by her brother, Joel Sewell, and her children, Elise Lynn Bennett, Kristofer Ray Miller, and Tristan Alexander Sowmick.
In keeping with Kelly's wishes, there will be no formal service. The family appreciates your prayers, love, and kind thoughts during this time.
