Loretta Smith, 95, of Mt. Pleasant died Friday, May 5, 2006 at New Hope Assisted Living. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Robert Byrne presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Beal City at 2:30 p.m. Friends may call at Lux Funeral Home on Monday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. with a vigil service beginning at 8:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Academy Foundation, Hospice of Central Michigan, or New Hope Assisted Living. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Loretta was born Sept. 26, 1910, in Isabella County, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Miller) Berg. She married Gerald Smith on June 19, 1928 at St. Philomena Church in Beal City and together worked on the family farm until 1942. They lived in Beal City from 1942-1952, at which time they moved to Mt. Pleasant. She was a Licensed Practical Attendant Nurse at the Mt. Pleasant Center for over 10 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and a former member of St. Joseph Church and its altar society. Some of her favorite pastimes were gardening, bird watching, crocheting and quilting. She made a quilt for each new grandchild born. She and her husband also enjoyed collecting rocks out West to make jewelry. Loretta is survived by four daughters, Maxine Kirvan of Oscoda, Arlene (William) Wilcox of Lake, Marie Massey of Mt. Pleasant, and Jeanette (Duane) Grnya of Port Orange, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald in 1986; two sons-in-law, Otis Kirvan and Royal Massey; two grandchildren, Judy Kirvan and Gary Kirvan; one great-granddaughter, Kellie Wheeler; three brothers, Frank, Edward and Albert Berg; and two sisters, Tillie Zuker and Margaret Lawens.
