Peg Gillis, age 82, of Sarasota, Fla. and formerly of Mt. Pleasant passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 in Sarasota. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Marthas Catholic Church in Sarasota. A memorial Mass was also held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Midland, Michigan on Jan. 15. Peg was born Dec. 10, 1922, in Judique, Nova Scotia, Canada, the daughter of Duncan and Agnes MacLellan. She was employed by the Isabella County Sheriff Department, working 16 years alongside her husband, Sheriff Don Gillis, as Matron of the jail. They both retired in 1981 and moved to Sarasota. Peg is survived by her children, Mel (Sharon) Gillis of Midland, Eileen (Bob) Strauss of Sarasota, and Elaine Gillis of Midland; sister, Mary McKenna of Harlingen, TX; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Gillis in 1994; sister, Evelyn Batherson; and brother, Malcolm MacLellan.
