Martha Gunderson, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Woodland Hospice in Mt Pleasant MI. Martha was born on December 11, 1930, in Albion, MI, daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Schultz) Sibal. After high school graduation, Martha attended Siena Heights in Adrian, MI for one year. She worked as a dental assistant in Albion, MI for three years. Martha attended the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, graduating in 1955 as a Dental Hygienist. She was selected as the first Dental Hygienist to serve as an examiner on the Michigan State Board of Dentistry. On Oct. 24, 1964, she married Leroy Gunderson at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in East Lansing, MI. Martha and Leroy moved to Mt. Pleasant MI in 1970 and raised their three children there. Together they established The Golf Center in 1973. She also helped him co-found the Junior Golf program in Mt. Pleasant in 1977 and helped with the program for 28 years where thousands of youths learned to play. Martha was a member of Sacred Heart Church where she volunteered as a Eucharistic minister, funeral luncheon server, and money counter. She also volunteered at McLaren Hospital for decades. Martha was a dedicated homemaker for her family and was known for her homemade apple and rhubarb pies. Martha is survived by her three children, Stephen Gunderson of Kettering, OH, Anne (James) Sewell of Albuquerque, NM and Mary (Andrew Skinner) Gunderson of Arlington, VA; seven grandchildren, Josh, Jake, and Abby Gunderson, Jack and Nicholas Sewell, and Elizabeth and Olivia Gunderson Goddard, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by both parents; husband, Leroy in 2016; and all nine of her siblings. A Funeral Mass for Martha will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant. Rite of Committal will be in Calvary Cemetery concluding with a luncheon in Lincoln Reception Center (attached to the funeral home). The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 14, from 4-6 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Thursday one hour prior to Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Sacred Heart Parish (Mt. Pleasant) in lieu of flowers.
