Mary Lou Smith, 80, of Lake Mecosta and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Central Michigan Community Hospital surrounded by loved ones. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Remus with Father Michael Burt presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph the Worker Cemetery in Beal City. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant on Friday from 2-8 p.m. with the Rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Saturday one hour prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Childrens Hospital, St. Michaels Church, or ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Mary Lou was born May 26, 1931, in Beal City, the daughter of the late Joseph and Eva (Fitzgerald) Smith. She grew up with her nine siblings near Beal City and graduated from Shepherd High School in 1949. Her first job was at the Pixie as a car-hop. She also worked at Ferro Stamping and Giant Supermarkets retiring in 1991. She moved to Canadian Lakes and began working at Country Corner Store. Most important to Mary Lou was her large extended family. She was always able to keep track of everyone, remembering names, birthdays and which child belonged to whom. Her pets were very special to her and she enjoyed spending time with them. Mary Lou is survived by her sister, Josephine Cuthbert of Flint; brother, Bernard (Joann) Smith of Oil City; sister-in-law, Jean Toland-Smith of Virginia; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward, Lyle and Earl Smith; sisters, Gretchen David, Lenora Allguire, Kathryn Breuer and Freida Price; and her dear friend, Lorraine Smith.
