Melvin Murphy, 70, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at home, surrounded by his family. His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 28, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Joe Wentworth of Central Assembly of God officiating. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. and on Monday one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Melvin was born April 9, 1940, in Flint the son of Melvin I. and Nona (VanGorder) Murphy. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Melvin married Donna Morence on June 9, 1970, in Owosso. He retired from the Morning Sun in 2009 after six years. Prior to that he had worked at Greenville Wire for nine years and was a truck driver for many years. Some of Melvins favorite pastimes were Bingo, baseball, fishing and hunting. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandson. Melvin is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna; six children, Donny Murphy, Kenneth (Lisa) Murphy, both of Owosso, Rebecca (Tim) Durfee of Mt. Pleasant, Timothy Murphy of Owosso, Duane (Cindy) Murphy of Muscatin, Iowa, and David (fiance, Vicki) Murphy of Mt. Pleasant; 14 grandchildren, Mitch, Nick, Shane and Amanda, Devon and Gabrielle, Michelle, Justin and Kera, Dawson, Brennan and Drake, and Cameron and Carter; one great-grandson, Shane Issac Duane; brother, Jerry (Bev) Murphy of Linden; sister-in-law, Mary Murphy of Owosso; brother-in-law, Charles Sharp of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Duane Buck Murphy; and sister, Patricia Sharp.
