Mildred Schafer, 88, of Beal City passed away Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant. A Funeral Mass for Mildred will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 25, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with Father Ricky Varner as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with a luncheon to follow in the church basement. The family will receive friends in the gathering room of the church on Friday from 2-6 p.m. with the Rosary beginning at 5:30 p.m. Visitation continues on Saturday one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Rosebush Manor. Envelopes are available at the church or Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home. Mildred was born April 12, 1928, in Beal City, daughter of the late William and Ida (Hagley) Tilmann. A 1946 graduate of St. Philomena High School in Beal City, she married Edward Schafer on January 24, 1948, at St. Philomena Church. She worked in patient care at the State Home for 15 years and also worked in food service at Robinson Hall (CMU) for three years. Mildred was a lifelong member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish. She enjoyed embroidery, traveling, flower gardening, but more than anything, loved being with her family. Mildred and Ed were blessed with seven children, Terrance (Barb) Schafer of Buena Vista, CO, Gloria (Thomas) Pung of Beal City, Victoria (Jerry) Sellon of Lake Isabella, Ronald (Linda) Schafer of Farwell, Beverly McCormick of Mt. Pleasant, Kevin (Jan) Schafer of Beal City, and Timothy Schafer of Beal City. They were also blessed with 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. In addition, Mildred is survived by one brother, Eugene Tilmann of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law, Dorothy Tilmann of Beal City; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ida Tilmann; husband, Ed in 2015; daughter-in-law, Lori Schafer in 2017; and siblings, Mary Courtright, Albert Tilmann and William Tilmann; and infant sister, Irene Tilmann.
