Norman Eugene Smith

Norman Smith, 66, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at McLaren Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant. Norman was born April 29, 1956, if Norfolk, Virginia, son of the late Raymond Kahl and Laura Lee (Bosco) Smith. He graduated from Cadillac High School in 1974 and, as a senior, was selected both First-Team All-State and First-Team All-American in Football. After receiving a full-ride scholarship with Central Michigan University, Norman earned a starting role as running back and was an integral teammate of the 1975 National Championship Team. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in education. In November of 1975, Norm interviewed at a new bar near campus called Wayside Central. Its owner, Dave Hunter, held an open call for staff and wanted football players to work as bouncers, to which Norm accepted. Norm eventually became an operating partner during his 42 years and 1 day at the bar and was the face of Wayside Central and O'Kelly's. The Hunter Family described Norm as the most dedicated manager that any business could ask for; extremely dedicated. He was firm, but well-liked by his fellow employees. Norm loved going for drives, traveling, and spending his days in nature, especially at the local dog park or fishing on the lake. An immeasurably generous and selfless man, Norm always cared for those around him in every way that he could. He was a good man, deserving of all kindness and respect, and was taken too soon. Each of us should hold his memory in our hearts and be grateful for the time we had together. Norm was a beloved father, devoted brother and son, and a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren. He was also a dear friend to so many others during his 66 years of life. He will be deeply missed. Norm leaves behind three sons, Kahl Smith, Denny Smith, and Kevin Smith, all of Mt. Pleasant; daughter, Alexandra Smith of Northville; four grandchildren, Amber, Annabelle, Addison, and Orion; and sister, Arla Schumacher of Cadillac.
