Norman Alex Wendrow, a distinguished engineer and dedicated property developer, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, at The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. Born to Barnaby Alex and Margaret (Myers) Wendrow on January 9, 1939, in Isabella County, Michigan, Norman's life was marked by unwavering hard work, profound generosity, and an unyielding commitment to his convictions.
A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in the class of 1957, Norman furthered his education at the University of Michigan, where he studied engineering. Shortly after, he served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1961, during which he proudly set the obstacle course record in basic training, a testament to his determination and strength.
Norman's professional career began at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan, where he applied his engineering acumen with dedication and skill. Later, embracing his entrepreneurial spirit, he became a successful property developer and operated heavy equipment, leaving a lasting imprint on the Mt. Pleasant community. Among his proudest accomplishments was the development of property featuring a street named in his father's honor, Wendrow Way, a tangible legacy that will endure for generations.
Beyond his professional achievements, Norman was a man of many passions. From a young age, he enjoyed fixing cars, was fascinated by trains, was an avid reader, and visited the library nearly every day. Norm had a huge appreciation for nature, fascinated by all the creatures that make the world go around. He cultivated a voracious collection of various items, reflecting both his curiosity and appreciation for life’s details. Known as a maverick and a man of great intelligence, Norman balanced his sharp mind with an immense generosity toward others, especially those in service roles such as restaurant servers.
His marriage to Sue Burns was blessed with two beloved daughters, Kristin and Jennifer. He took immense pride in his grandchildren, Zachary Helms, Nate Helms, and Emerson Helms, cherishing moments like holding his two grandsons on his knee to demonstrate how to operate a D9 excavator. Fond memories also include Sunday drives, teaching his daughters how to drive without the benefit of power steering, and spending time at his shop. These simple yet treasured times exemplify the unique experiences he brought into his daughters' lives.
Norman is survived by his daughters Kristin (Dave) Helms of Southbury, CT and Jennifer Wendrow (Amy Howard) of Bend, OR; grandchildren Zachary, Nate, and Emerson Helms; sister Sylvia Wendrow of Colorado; half-brother Greg Wendrow of Mt. Pleasant; half-sister Margaret (Dave) of Georgia, and dear friend Dale Dahlenberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Norman's life was a mosaic of hard work and independence. His legacy is etched not only in the physical spaces he developed but in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and uncompromising convictions.
Cremation has taken place and no formal services are planned.
