Paul L. Preston Jr.

Paul Preston, a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to those he loved, passed away very peacefully on October 14, 2026, at the Woodland Hospice House in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He was 82.

Born on January 30, 1944, in Atlanta, GA, to the late Paul and Louise Preston. He attended Aquin High School in Freeport, IL, and graduated from Loras College in Iowa. Paul carried the values of family, hard work, deep loyalty to his Catholic faith, and a heart full of kindness and love.

Family meant everything to him. A true provider, Paul had over 30 years of dedicated service in local governments working in Tecumseh, South Haven, Traverse City, and 15 years in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He retired in 2006.

Paul was respected for his inspirational leadership, his sterling professionalism, and his impeccable ethical standards.

He served as President of the Michigan City Management Association and President of the Mt. Pleasant Kiwanis Club. Paul was on the Board of Trustees for the Michigan Municipal League, active with the International City/County Management Association and Mt. Pleasant’s Chamber of Commerce.

Woodworking was Paul’s favorite hobby, having created many beautiful pieces for family & friends.

Other favorite pastimes enjoyed by Paul were traveling, ‘Glamping’ (as Kathy called it), boating, golf, & bocce ball. He was proud of shooting two holes-in-one.

In 2016, Paul and Kathy officially became snowbirds, spending winters at their home in North Port, FL, where they embraced sunshine, golf, and many wonderful friends.

Paul is survived by his loving wife Kathy; his children Stephanie (Joe) Markey and Paul Preston; stepchildren Alissa (Jeff) Doepker and Jason Shirley; 8 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents Louise & Paul Preston, his first wife Betty, and his daughter Christine.
