Robert "Sam" Thering, 86, of Beal City passed away Thursday, June 20, 2024, at McLaren Central Michigan. Sam was born May 20, 1938, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, son of the late Elmer and Ann (McDonald) Thering. He was welcomed into the home by his elder siblings Joe and Mary Lou. Sam would later welcome his younger siblings Tom, John "Jack", Jean, Jim, Elizabeth, and Pat. After graduating from Beal City High School in 1958, Sam served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1960. He married Paula Lee Stegman on October 26, 1963, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They were blessed with a daughter, Brenda, and shared 55 years together until her passing in 2019. He was employed by Michcon as a gas mechanic for 32 years, retiring in 1997. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, spending time with his great grandchildren, and watching Aggie sports. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Recker of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Melissa (Howard) Foster of Blanchard, Kelsi Karcher of Lake Isabella, and Courtney (Codee) Preston of Blanchard; 9 great grandchildren, Brennen, Gunnar, Cason, Finley, Gage, Lane, Grant, Gavi, and Gus; siblings, Thomas (Ellie) Thering of School Section Lake, Jean (Russ) Messersmith of Grand Rapids, Jim (Sarah) Thering of Mt. Pleasant, Elizabeth Miller of Chicago, IL, and Pat Thering of Mt. Pleasant; in-laws, Rose Thering, and Connie Thering; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Paula; siblings and in-laws, Joe Thering, Mary Lou and Lyle Willoughby, John "Jack" Thering, and Ken Miller; son in-law, Dave Recker; nephew, Brian Thering; and niece, Shelly Thering-Rau. A Funeral Mass for Sam will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with Father Thomas McNamara as celebrant. A luncheon will follow at the Beal City Knights of Columbus Hall. Rite of Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Monday from 4-7 p.m. with the Vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation continues in the gathering room of the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
