Roland Augustine, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, and formerly of Detroit, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at Woodland Hospice. His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd. with Pastor Brian LaMew of Mt. Pleasant Community Church officiating. Burial will be in Garfield Township Cemetery in Lake Station at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Hospice, Commission On Aging (Food With Friends) or Mt. Pleasant Community Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Roland was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Fairchance, PA, the son of the late Nicholas and Eva (Cayton) Augustine. He married Joanne Bryja on Sept. 27, 1947. After her death in 1993, he married Freida Turley Skowneski on Dec. 10, 1994 in Mt. Pleasant. A graduate of Redstone High School in Republic, PA, Roland served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 during World War II as a Machinist Mate, Second Class. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #517 and the Mt. Pleasant Community Church. Roland worked as a tool and die maker for Ford Motor Company for 10 years and later was employed by General Motors for 24 years. He retired in 1983. Roland is survived by his wife, Freida of Mt. Pleasant; two children, Nicholas (Elaine) Augustine of Northville and Joann Becky (Michael) Duke of Sprague River, OR; daughter-in-law, Jan Augustine of Holland; three step-children, Michael (Barbara) Skowneski of St. Johns, Mark Skowneski of Euless, TX and Marlette (Nate) Clinkscale of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (John) Allumi of Prudenville; brother-in-law, Philip Libertini of Brownsville, PA; and sister-in-law, Ruth Augustine of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joanne; son, Ronald; sisters, Josephine Delgado and Theresa Libertini; and two brothers, Earl and James.
