With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sally Jo Merrifield (née Langlois), who departed from this world on July 30, 2026, at the age of 72. Sally was born on November 1, 1953, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, to the late O'Neil and Audrey Langlois, and from the very beginning, she radiated warmth, kindness, and a steadfast devotion to those she loved.

A graduate of Shepherd High School, Sally ventured out into the working world with determination and integrity. She first began her career as an office administrator at J Murray and Company. From there, she continued sharing her talents at Lake to Lake Insulation, once again as an office administrator. The true cornerstone of her vocation, however, was at Central Michigan Community Hospital, now known as McLaren Central Michigan, where she dedicated an extraordinary 37 and a half years as a housekeeper. Sally wore this accomplishment with immense pride, cherishing the opportunity to serve her community and bring comfort to others. Her unwavering work ethic and commitment left a legacy of excellence, reliability, and warmth that touched colleagues and patients alike. When she retired in 2019, it was not only the end of a remarkable career, but also the closing of a heartfelt chapter filled with countless memories and lifelong friendships.

While Sally’s professional life was marked by diligence and pride, her heart belonged to her family. She was the glue that held everyone together, a true caretaker whose love shaped every relationship. Every day, she embraced the joys and challenges of motherhood, marriage, siblinghood, aunt-hood, and friendship with unwavering patience and deep affection.

Husband, Michael Merrifield of Mt. Pleasant; son, Edward Merrifield of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Nancy Durfee of Mt. Pleasant; nieces, Denise (Brian) Walton of Shepherd, Belinda Durfee of Mt. Pleasant; great-nieces, Mallory Walton of the United Kingdom, Shelby Walton of Torrance, CA, and Samantha Durfee of Dayton, OH. Each of them carries with them memories of Sally’s gentle guidance and joyful spirit.

Sally was predeceased by her beloved parents, O'Neil and Audrey Langlois, her sisters Leona Bufford and Theresa Langlois, and her brother-in-law, Berdet Durfee. Though they have gone before her, Sally’s love for them never faded; they remained cherished presences in her heart.

The tapestry of Sally’s life was sweetly woven with a wealth of interests and passions. Her love for gardening, sewing, quilting, reading, and scrapbooking brought color and comfort to her family home. An avid crocheter, she created beautiful pieces with her loving care. More than anything, Sally treasured her adventures exploring with Michael and Edward, these moments, both big and small, formed the foundation of their close-knit family. Sally’s greatest joy was always, without question, taking care of her loved ones.

She was a hard worker who gave her all, not only in her career but in every aspect of her life. She cared deeply, acted selflessly, and brought a steady sense of belonging wherever she went. For her family and all who knew her, Sally wasn’t just a name; she was the constant, the confidante, the nurturer, and the friend.

As those closest to Sally navigate life without her loving presence, they find comfort in the enduring memories she leaves behind, full of laughter, kindness, lessons, and the beautiful reminders of how she enriched all their days.

Sally Jo Merrifield’s legacy is one of devotion, compassion, and steadfast love. She will be deeply missed and forever honored in the hearts of her family and all whose paths she crossed.

To honor Sally's remarkable life, her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home. A luncheon will follow at Lincoln Reception Center (attached to the funeral home). The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, August 3, from 4-7 p.m. and on Tuesday one hour before the service. Sally will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Hospice or the wishes of the family.
