Shirley A. Rise

Shirley A. Rise, 77, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., on Saturday, Oct. 25, from Noon until 2 p.m. Cremation has taken place. No other formal services are scheduled. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Hospice (formerly Hospice of Central Michigan) or the Mt. Pleasant High School Band. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Shirley was born July 16, 1931, in Newaygo, the daughter of Benjamin and Gladys (Golden) Burgess. On December 24, 1948, she married Donald Rise in Newaygo. After leaving Newaygo, they spent the next 11 years in Beaverton before moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1966. Shirley and her husband Don purchased Rise Machine Shop in 1965 where she has worked for the last 43 years with her husband. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and Tai Chi. She also belonged to the Desk and Derrick Club. Shirley is survived by her husband, Donald of Mt. Pleasant; four children, Mary Beth (Steve) Ulrey, Donald James (Abby Dunsmore) Rise, Jr., Kenneth Charles (Kathy) Rise, Ann Eileen (Rick Lewis) Rise; daughter-in-law, Nancy Westbrook; four grandchildren, Aaron Jon (Lori) Ulrey, Katy Lynn Rise, Alexander Thomas Rise and Josh Utterback; two great-grandchildren, Joshua (born July 7, 2006) and Adrian (born January 29, 2008); one sister, Susan (Rod) Hartung; four brothers, Tom (Brenda) Burgess, Jesse Burgess, Dan Burgess and Dick (Susie) Burgess. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
