Shirley (Tevelde) Schafer Hill

Shirley Hill, 65, of Hillman and formerly of Mt. Pleasant died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005 at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. Her funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Lux Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Darold Hill officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Beal City. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and on Monday from noon until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to Mid Michigan Community College for nursing education. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Shirley was born Oct. 14, 1939, in Brooten, Minn., the daughter of John and Jenny (Schaap) TeVelde. She married Donald Nick Schafer on June 17, 1961 at St. Joseph Church in Beal City. After his death in 1990, Shirley married Rex Hill on May 29, 1999 in Lake. She lived in the Mt. Pleasant area most of her adult life, moving to Hillman three years ago. She graduated from Saginaw General School of Nursing and taught at Central Michigan University and Mid Michigan Community College. She also worked as a nurse at Central Michigan Community Hospital. The last 10 years of her career were spent inspecting nursing homes. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Harrison. Some of her favorite hobbies were fishing, crocheting, knitting, and reading. Shirley is survived by her husband, Rex Hill of Hillman; four children, Joseph (Debra) Schafer and Paul (Carme) Schafer, both of Mt. Pleasant, Thomas (Cathy) Schafer of Lady Lake, Fla. and Philip (Carrie) Schafer of Gaylord; nine grandchildren; one brother, Calvin (Hilda) TeVelde of Charlotte; four sisters, Esther (Clete) Corrin of Grand Rapids, Jean Smit of Lyden, WA, Joey (Larry) Visser of Lowell and Libby (Bob) Lancionni of Grand Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband of 29 years, Donald Nick Schafer; two brothers, Del and Herman TeVelde; and two sisters, Bernice and Dorothy.
