Shirley Jane Smale

Shirley Smale, 87, of Mt. Pleasant passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015, at Maplewood in Mt. Pleasant with her family by her side. A private family service will be held in accordance with Shirleys wishes. She will be laid to rest in Chippewa Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Great Lakes Caring Hospice Foundation, Mid Michigan Industries, or St. Judes Childrens Hospital. Envelopes are available at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home. Shirley was born Nov. 17, 1928, in Lansing, daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Parent) Ingersoll. She graduated from Resurrection Catholic High School in Lansing. She was employed by Central Michigan University Auxiliary Services, retiring after 25 years of service. She was a life member of the Beta Sigma Phi social sorority and enjoyed the many activities and friends she made through the organization while living in Tennessee, Louisiana and Michigan. She was also active in the local group that started the Pre-School Center for the Handicapped in Mt. Pleasant in the 1960s before such education was available. She enjoyed making time to help friends, relatives and neighbors. Shirley was a loving and devoted mother to her five daughters who survive, Dolores (Steve) Cline of Mt. Pleasant, Kathy (Tom) Beard of Vestaburg, Brenda (Jack) Grim of Shepherd, Janet (Dean) Cook of Shepherd, and Karen Smale of Mt. Pleasant; 10 grandchildren, Janelle (Jon) Joslin, Charlie (Jenny) Cline, Melissa (Joel) Clark, Rashel (Ryan) Johnson, Shane Grim, Scott (Brittany Larkin) Grim, Sheldon Grim, and Jamie (Matt) Machuta, Ashley (Joshua) Topper, and Alicia (Michael Durham) Cook; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nephew, Bob Woodard of Houghton Lake; and niece, Linda Parker of Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Bill Woodard; parents-in-law, Floyd and Billie Smale; and her daughters father, George Smale.
