Sophia L. Schafer, 90, of Beal City died Monday, April 24, 2006 at Central Michigan Community Hospital with her family at her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at St. Joseph The Worker Church in Beal City with Father John Cotter presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at Lux Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-9 p.m. with a vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph The Worker School. Envelopes are available at Lux Funeral Home. Sophie was born May 10, 1915 in Isabella County, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Wagner) Fussman. She married Paul Schafer on February 9, 1937 at St. Philomena Church in Beal City. She catered numerous weddings, funerals and formal events for 20 years with her sister-in-law, Mae Fussman. She and her husband spent many years traveling together. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and past vice-president of the Council of Catholic Women. Sophie is survived by six children, Richard (Gerry) Schafer, Donald (Sue) Schafer, Rosemary (Bob) Curtiss, and Wayne (Connie) Schafer, all of Beal City, Paulette (Neal) Wood of Rodney, and Keith (Kim) Schafer of Rosebush; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; her brother, Walter (Lea) Fussman of Mt. Pleasant; her sister, Rose (Fred) Fox of Beal City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; grandson, Donald Schafer Jr.; three brothers, Joseph, Edward, and Christopher Fussman; and one sister, Anna Simmer.
