Sophie Gergel, 89, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Iselin, NJ, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at Tendercare of Mt. Pleasant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Thursday one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to HATS. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Sophie was born May 15, 1920, in Glen Lyon, PA, the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Katch) Kacvinski. She married Michael Gergel on Nov. 26, 1942 at St. Stephens Church in Newark, NJ. She was a member of St. Cecelia Parish in Iselin, NJ and its rosary society. Sophie had a sparkling personality and loved to joke with others. She was a dedicated wife and mother who took wonderful care of her home and family. Sophie is survived by her son, Professor Richard A. Gergel and his fiance, Cynthia Rosenberger of Mt. Pleasant; her sister-in-law, Evelyn Kacvinski of Bloomfield, NJ; and her beloved nephews, Andrew (Arlene) Kacvinski of Little Egg Harbor, NJ and Richard (Linda) Kacvinski of Flemington, NJ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael in 2004; and five brothers, Andrew, Edward, Joseph, John, and Stephen Kacvinski.
